Horizontal Flammability Chamber (FMVSS 302)

Almost 40 years ago the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a proposed flammability standard that would protect occupants from serious harm in the event that lighted matches, lighters or smoldering cigarettes should ignite the automotive interior. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 302 (FMVSS 302) was adopted in 1971 and became effective for vehicle models introduced in 1972. The FMVSS 302 standard set a flame spread rate not to exceed 102 mm per minute which was identified as the adequate amount of time for the occupant to stop the vehicle and exit without serious harm. FMVSS 302 is applicable to interior components including seats, door panels, headliners, carpet, seat belts, air bags, package shelves, instrument panels, steering wheel covers and padding, as well as all other interior fiber components.
